"Commuting to a Job You Hate"

Coping with the Daily Grind

Reading time 3 minutes

If you dread going to work each day, the daily commute can feel crushing.

When you already hate your job, hate getting out of bed knowing you have a commute that sucks.

And you hate your commute more than the trip to the dentist (no offence to your dentist). The commute to and from the job can seem unbearable.

For most of us, commuting is an unavoidable reality. But, for 53% of us, it is downright agony because 53% of us hate our jobs.

Whether you drive, take public transport, or use some other mode of travel, getting to and from work has to be done.

I have an idea to make it less sufferable.

Here are some tips to make it more bearable and may make your job, well, dare I say it, good!

Nah, I’m not going to go that far. Let’s settle with a few steps up from miserable.

Minimize Your Time on the Road

Try to find ways to shorten your commute. Can you move closer to your workplace, or find a job nearer to your home? Shaving 15-20 minutes off your travel time each way can make a big difference.

Relocate

If relocating isn't an option, see if your employer offers flexible scheduling. Being able to start or end your workday 30 minutes earlier or later can help you avoid the worst of rush hour traffic.

Work-from-home

Work-from-home opportunities. Now that sounds good. Work from home. Working remotely a few days a week eliminates the commute at least for a few days. Save on fuel, fares and time.

Carpooling

If you drive, see if you can arrange a carpool. Having someone to chat with can make the commute seem shorter.

Productive Time

When none of the above is an option then focus on using the time as production time. If you take public transportation, use that time to read, work on your laptop, or just gaze out the window and daydream. Do things you enjoy and find relaxing like reading biographies, listening to podcasts, audiobooks, or music that puts you in a better mood.

Creating a Plan to Quit

Use the time to plan your day, make a to-do list, or brainstorm ideas for a side hustle. Eh, what about creating a plan to quit the stinking job and do your own thing? Think about that.

Prioritize Self-Care

Commuting can be physically and mentally draining, especially when you're already stressed about a job you hate. Make sure to prioritize self-care during this time.

Pack a healthy snack to enjoy on your way. Take deep breaths, do some light stretches if possible, or listen to a relaxing playlist.

Unwind Time

When you arrive home, give yourself time to unwind before jumping into chores, errands, or other obligations. Take a short walk, do some light exercise, or simply sit quietly for 10-15 minutes. This can help you transition from "work mode" to "home mode" and recharge before tackling the rest of your evening.

Spend time with your kids. Work on a hobby you love. This time is a valuable opportunity, and how you use it can make a big difference in your life. Get your thoughts away from the day and focus on ‘me time’.

The time before you go to bed is golden. This is a special part of the day to do what you want.
It’s easy to chill out and watch mind-numbing TV. While Netflix might not be the best choice, watching documentaries or TED talks can help you learn and grow. Search YouTube and you will find some great stuff.

The daily commute is tough enough on its own. But when you're stuck in a job you hate, that time spent travelling to and from work can feel especially stressful.

Making strategic adjustments, maximizing your time and prioritizing self-care, you can make your commute more bearable. And who knows, you may enjoy that time, if only for a while.

That's it from me for another month. I look forward to catching up in August.

In the meantime be kind to yourselves.

Remember - Life is short.

Stay healthy and do what you do best.
